SHOP SPOTLIGHT // Urbane on The Considered Lifestyle

Scott and Ben, owners of URBANE on Broadway in Oklahoma City bring their “considered tastes” to the downtown heartbeat of OKC. With a passion for sourcing all things “considered” for your thoughtfully curated surroundings, URBANE thrives on meeting new clients and friends and bringing new perspectives in interior design. Here’s our Shop Spotlight Q+A with Scott and Ben!

OM: Passions of the Owners?

U: We love to find unique items that will excite our clients, and we love to make people feel at home when they are in shop.  We will always do our best to help clients find exactly what they are looking for, at a fair price.

OM: Some of your favorite designers / brands you carry / why?

U: Precedent is the designer of the chairs above and we love a lot of their designs for their originality.

The curved wood chair is Gus Modern and we are the exclusive dealer for this amazing company.

Gus Modern’s pieces are simple and elegant, with clean lines. Gus Modern also strives to be as sustainable as possible, and uses foam made from recycled bottles for their cushions and reclaimed wood for their frames.

Schott Zwiesel is a line of crystal stemware and barware made in Germany. The crystal is infused with titanium instead of lead, making it more resilient to breakage. The stemware is delicate and beautiful.

We carry some wonderful throws, blankets, scarves and pillows from Faribault Woolen Mill Company, the oldest wool mill in the United States.  The company has made the military’s wool blankets since the Civil War, and their experience shows in the beautiful quality of their goods.

The wood is Mango and olive wood from Be Home and they are both wonderful.

We adore the Chilewich brand for placemats and other interior textiles.

OM: Some favorite designers of both of you?

U: (without hesitation) Steven Volpe and Robert Stilin

OM: Do you work directly with interior designers?

U: We do work directly with designers and other professionals, and we provide a discount for project work. We also provide consultations and are happy to bring pieces to a client’s home to help them visualize how a piece will ultimately work or source and style the right fit for the home and environment.

OM: What you love about what you do?

U: We love the people we meet through the shop.  We have become good friends with so many people we may have never met if it were not for Urbane.

OM: Single best piece of designing advice to clients from YOUR expertise?

U: “Ready for it?? Less is more, buy the things you love and love them. If you have to wait a month or two so you can afford it, then wait. You are going to be happy you did instead of settling for instant gratification on a mediocre piece.”

RISK YOUR BLISS // Artist Denise Duong on Adventure

Denise Duong and I worked at Kamp’s together in OKC for a brief stint in 1999. I had just returned from the near year long adventure of living in Europe and was having trouble with the re-entry (quite possibly might still might be 16 years later) and culture shock that comes from traveling the globe in flip flops to serving juice and cappies on Classen. Denise was a delightful breath of fresh air and her creative talent impacted me immediately all those years ago with it’s fascinating intensity. And today her work is even more captivating and originally expressive. Besides her beautiful spirit, Denise has an amazing laugh and sense of humor, but really we are here to address the girl’s mad skills with a pen (or brush or pencil or scissors).

OM: Tell us a little bit about this show DENISE DUONG 2015?
DENISE: “This show is like a diary, if you are able to read it you’ll know exactly how my life has been going.  Its the most intimate show I’ve had —its’ pure emotion.  Of course, spiced up with my deepest love. travel and adventure. I’ve spent a majority of the year in and out of houses, states, and countries, which is a lifestyle that comes very natural for me and I have never known to live any other way.  People have told me to slow down, I say –‘ catch me if you can.’  I’ve been emotionally tested so much in life, but I’ve been blessed with the mantra “it’s ALL good”.  And yes, I’m definitely spreading my wings and flying, with a smile on my face. “
OM: “What words of insight do you hope the audience will takeaway from the JRB show?
DENISE: “Take a risk and follow your bliss. Listen to your inner voice. When you talk to yourself, answer honestly. Then follow.”

December 4th at JRB on the Elms, you have the chance to meet this cool girl and her creations from a year of following her bliss for adventure.

YOGA FOCUS // Inversions for Transformation

Sirsasana (headstand) is a transformational posture.
Anytime we are looking for transformation in our life’s it is helpful to start by shifting our perspective. And there is no better way to shift our perspective energetically and mentally than to shift our perspective physically and get upside down.

Inversions are certainly one of my favorite things about the practice of yoga asana. Practicing inversions in yoga offer physical, mental, emotional, and energetic healing and support. Physically and mentally inversions supply us with more oxygen to our brains. From this radical increase in oxygen supply the gravity of aging is reversed. Inversions support us in our life’s longevity by increasing the immunity of our bodies, supporting our mental functioning, increasing our physical and mental energy, and improving our concentration and memory. They also assist us in nervous system healing by encouraging relaxation as our parasympathetic nervous system is allowed to be present so the body, mind, and spirit can truly receive the fruits and healing that the yogic practice offers.

Emotionally and energetically inversions allow us to shift our perspective. When we shift our perspective physically we can eventually also begin to shift our emotional and energetic perspective. As we manifest this deeper level of healing through the physical part of our practice we also begin to heal our self-worth. Through these techniques the healing of our first three chakras are supported. The inversion practice offers us a greater sense of balance and strength in our root chakra. Our second chakra is nurtured with the practice of playfulness and the pleasure that either restorative or more advanced inversions give dependent on the practitioner. And finally our solar plexus chakra is strengthened as our will and confidence are empowered through these asanas. In this process we build heat within which the yogis call Tapas. Tapas is the process in which we use discipline to create an internal fire to begin to burn away old impressions or as the yogis say (Samskaras). As we burn away the Samskaras (old thought patterns, habits, and behaviorism’s that no longer serve our highest good); we make space for new thought patterns and behaviorism’s that serve a higher vibration in our lives. I give thanks to these ancient postures and how they have blessed me in my life. I invite you to get on your mat today to experience the bountiful fruits that an inversion practice offers. And may you always take what you breathe in on your mat off your mat and into your life’s.
A modification of the headstand above is for those who may still be working on core strength and balance. It can be performed near a wall if support is needed.

FOOD FOR ALL // A Collective Movement to Solve Oklahoma’s Hunger Problem

There is a new team in town bringing “POSSIBLE” solutions to what most would consider “IMPOSSIBLE” social problems. MADE POSSIBLE is a social action community that creates specific ways to make more good possible for people and the planet, an increase in happiness of humankind being a direct byproduct of these efforts. MADE POSSIBLE’s first project is the Food For All truck, a sustainable position on solving the hunger crisis which faces over 25% of Oklahomans.

The project heroes for this social good platform are found in A Good Egg Dining Group, First National Bank of Oklahoma and Whole Foods.

  • A Good Egg Dining Group will run the truck, staff the truck, maintain the truck in other words all things truck. This beloved Oklahoma restaurant group eagerly signed up to donate time, money, resources and sustaining support by spearheading the “Food For All” program.
  • Whole Foods Market will provide the food, nutritional resources and volunteer manpower.
  • First National Bank of Oklahoma is helping secure the physical truck. Now that’s a community bank DOING things for community!

What does a “Food For All” truck do?

  1. Provides lifetime funding support with 100% of net proceeds from food truck sales going directly to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma
  2. Serves complimentary nutritious meals to Oklahoma at-risk children in need every month
  3. Provides education on the value and importance of nutrition and balanced eating through cooking demonstrations, volunteerism and distributed materials
  4. Finally adds an A Good Egg Dining option to our local food truck event scene serving foods sourced from the highest quality, sustainable sustenance from Whole Foods Market Oklahoma City

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 2.48.03 PM

Made Possible’s  Co-Founder Adrian Young’s inspiring voice of reason provides insights on how Oklahomans can pull together (exactly 6,500 Oklahomans at $5 a head) to solve the local hunger crisis.

What most excites you about this project receiving funding?

The overall validation that making more “good” happen will have on, by and for community, is truly possible. The affirmation that people value teaming up with businesses and causes to participate together in projects rooted in common good outcomes. The fruits of believing and empowering people to connect with each other around a critical cause: solving Oklahoma’s hunger problem.

The MADE POSSIBLE movement was created to forge a social action community comprised of doers of good – YOU. We want to serve as a hub of connection in making good happen. By connecting people with each other and giving our local #WHATIF possibilities a place to live and grow, we turn social problems into MADE POSSIBLE success stories. When local companies connect to projects of purpose that resonate with the communities they serve, we collaboratively create change at a grassroots level.

“I believe in people, I believe in their desire to make more good happen and I believe projects like Food For All bring people together to create tangible outcomes collectively is a wonderful way to live in community.”

The Food For All project is not about a fundraising effort to build out a food truck, it is about Oklahomans participating together to help solve Oklahoma’s hunger problem. It’s about an effort that inserts the epidemic of children going to bed hungry into our mainstream culture. The fact that 1 in 4 Oklahoman children struggle with hunger is not a sideline topic. This is a front and center problem we ALL have the means to solve. The Food For All food truck being present at our favorite events, helps keep the conversation top of mind and integrated into our culture. As this solution rolls out, we will all be participating in building this vessel for the good of community and sharing how the impact of each “doers” $5 contribution continues to feed forward.

MIND YOUR DAY // Organize for Surprise

You wake up all on your own without an alarm. You hear the sounds of the birds singing beautifully in the trees. You get ready, and have your coffee in the crisp morning air. Then you go wake the kids up without a fight and everyone gets where they need to go early, and the day goes according to schedule. But let’s be real, no real person has a morning like this. It probably goes a little more like this. The third alarm goes off, and you drag yourself to go wake the kids up. They want to get out of bed as much as you did. On a good morning you can grab coffee before you leave the house or on the way, and you might make it everywhere you need to go right on time.

Isn’t there an easier way to run your day?

There most definitely is!

The best days are those that are organized before they even begin. Take the time the evening before to schedule your day. Write out everything you can think of that needs to be done and then prioritize it. One of the easiest ways to prioritize is to color code your to do list. Anything that has to be done that day is highlighted one color, and anything that can wait till the next day is highlighted another color. Another useful way to make sure that your day stays organized is to block out time frames for different activities.  For instance, you can block out an hour for getting ready in the morning. Then another thirty minutes for getting the kids to school. Create some buffer time in your day to expect the unexpected. Things will always go differently than you plan for them to, but if you already expect that to happen it won’t ruin your day.

“Chaos thrives on the element of surprise, and you take control of your day when you plan for the chaos.”

Try it for one week. Commit to plan your day the night before for the next seven days and see if you feel more in control. We can’t promise that your days will be full of birds singing and helping you make dinner, but when you plan and organize your day you are the one in control.

It’s time for you to run your day not have your day run you.

YOGA FOCUS // February

  // OPEN TO LOVE //

Wild Thing with the hand positioned on Anahata (the Heart Chakra) is a beautiful and deep backbend which encourages the healing and expansion of the heart energy.

Through this expression we start to break up old physical and energetic layers or shields that we have put around our hearts to protect us from the events of our life’s that have wounded us. As we open the heart physically we also open up and heal energetically; allowing for more love to flow through us to others and to receive love more abundantly from others.

BE MINE // V-Day Cards That Don’t Suck

I found sooo many Valentines Day that I loved on Etsy! I tried to narrow them down, but alas, it was very difficult.

I love these indie cards. The look is more kitschy and modern and the sentiments are so much more real (read NOT CHEESY) than the major greeting card companies. They are so refreshing!

Happy upcoming Love Day.
